      • must show social functioning that  has declined
      • No evidence of being caused by medical factors
      • Positive symptoms refers to: hallucinations, delusions, and insertion of thoughts (all things that are added)
      • Negative symptoms refers to: poverty of speech, withdrawal from society and flattening of mood
