  • types of sampling methods
    • random
      • every member of TP have equal chance of being involved in research
        • name pulling from hat (TP)
      • - difficult to carry out if TP is too large
      • + researcher has no influence, reducing bias
    • stratified
      • take each group in proportion from the TP
        • randomly select numbers in same proportion as TP
      • + most representativeof TP, results can be generalised to people in TP
      • - difficult & time consuming, could put selves in wrong category
    • systematic
      • every Nth person from TP
        • e.g every 3rd person taken from TP
      • + researcher has no influence, less bias
      • - practically difficult if TP is too large
    • volunteer
      • people in TP volunteer
        • adverts placed asking for people in TP
      • - tend to be bias so cannot generalise, a lot of demand chracterisitcs
      • + little effort for researcher, if pp eager means less likely to sabbotage
