  • Types of Religious experience (also key words)
    • CONVERSION
      • A biblical example is St Paul. Other well-publicised examples include Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) and Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) who both converted to Islam.
      • Definition: When your life is changed by giving yourself to God.
    • MIRACLE
      • Definition: Something which seems to break a law of science and makes you think only God could have done it.
      • The Bible contains examples of Jesus working Miracles such as walking on water. Recently people have gone to Lourdes in France and have claimed to have been healed from illnesses previously called incurable.
    • NUMIOUS
      • Definition: The feeling of the presence of something greater than you
      • Examples of numinous are when people are overcome with a feeling of awe and wonder, perhaps the sight of a new-born baby or an amazing view.
    • PRAYER
      • Definition: An attempt to contact God, usually through words.
      • When a prayer is answered the person praying will assume God has responded to their request. In the Old testament book of Kings, Elijah prayed that it would not rain and his prayer was answered. Likewise in the old Testament book of Exodus, God answered many of Moses' prayers including the parting of the Red Sea.
    • (Religious Experience)
      • Something which makes a person think that in some way they have come into contact with God. There are four types (see rest of mind map). When they happen they usually lead to a new or increased belief in God.
