  • Type 1 Diabetes
    • Causes
      • People do not make enough insulin in their pancreas, so blood glucose level stay high after a meal
      • If you suffered from a viral infection, e.g. rubella
        • The white blood cells that deal with this virus as part of the immune system also destroy insulin-making cells
      • Giving babies cow's milk too early
        • Causes them to make antibodies against proteins in the cow's milk+ these antibodies also attack insulin-making cells
      • Some antibiotics+ anti-cancer drugs destroy insulin-making cells
      • Trauma injury pancreatic tumours also destroy these cells
      • Genetic
        • White blood cells+ antibodies only attack insulin-making cells that have particular-shaped protein antigens on their surface
    • Symptoms
      • Glucose in urine
        • Caused by kidneys filtering out too much glucose and not reabsorbing it all
      • Thirst
        • Because a lot of water goes out with urine and you urinate more frequently, your blood lacks water
    • Long-term effects
      • Blindness due to damage to the retina
      • Poor wound healing
      • Ulcers
      • Risk of stroke
      • Risk of heart attack
