  • Transport in plants 1
    • Why do plants need a transport system?
      • Plants have a high requirement for mineral ions and water.
    • What is a plants transport system?
      • Specialised vascular bundles - consisting of the xylem and phloem
        • Xylem : water and soluble mineral ions (upwards)
        • Phloem : assimilates  (up and down)
    • Diclotydenous plants have two seed leaves and a branching pattern of veins
    • Where is the vascular bundle located?
      • Center of a young root
        • Xylem is in the middle in an 'X' shape
          • Phloem is found in-between the corners of the 'X'
            • Surrounding this is the epidermis
              • Surrounding that is the meristem cells called the pericycle
                • Surrounding this is the medulla
        • Provides strength to the plant
    • In wood plants, the vascular bundle separates and forms rings as it gets older : provides strength and flexibility
      • In non wood plants, the vascular bundle separates and becomes discrete
        • Vascular bundles form in the outermost area of plants in the veins and midribs of leaves
          • In each vein, the xylem is on top of the phloem
    • In the transverse section of a vascular bundle, the outermost layer is the Collenchyma
      • Then there is the cortex
        • Then there is the vascular bundle which consists of the phloem being the outermost, the sclerenchyma in the middle and the xylem being the innermost
          • the space which the vascular bundles lie in is the medulla
