  • Transition Elements
    • have the typical metal properties
      • good conductors of heat & electricity
      • very dense, strong & shiny
      • are much less reactive than group 1 metals
        • e.g. don't react as vigorously with water or oxygen
      • much denser, stronger, harder & with higher melting points (apart from mercury) than group 1 metals
    • often have more than 1 ion - e.g. Fe2+, Fe3+
      • different ions usually form different coloured compounds
    • the compounds are colourful due to the transition metal ion they contain
    • transition metals & their compounds all make good catalysts
      • e.g. iron is used in the Haber process
