  • Transition elements
    • Compounds that contain a transition element are often coloured
      • Copper compunds are often blue
      • Iron(II) compounds are often pale green
      • Iron(III) compunds are often orange/brown
    • Transition elements are often used as catalysts
      • Iron is used in the Haber process to make ammonia
      • Nickel is used in the manufacture of margarine to harden the oils
    • Sodium hydroxide solution reacts with compounds of each transition metal to make a solid of a particular colour
      • Copper(II) ions from a blue solid
      • Iron(II) ions form a grey/green solid
      • Iron(III) ions form an orange/brown gelatinous solid
      • These solids are metal hydroxide precipitates
