- Tradition
- A recurring theme of conservatism is its defence of tradition : values, practices and institutions that have endured through time
- Conservatives believe that traditions should be preserved because they have survived the test of history
- For some eg. Burke this links to religion as traditions are regarded as God Given. Burke believed that society was shaped by natural law and that challenging tradition is against God's will
- Burke described tradition as a partnership between those who are living, those who are dead and those who are yet to be born
- However this belief has been discredited by man made traditions such as parliamentary government rather than monarchy. Are these not God's will?
- Most conservatives believe in tradition without arguing its divine origins. Tradition instead reflects the wisdom of the past.
- Darwin- Natural selection applies here as only the strongest traditions survive.
- The monarchy provides the people with a sense of social cohesion by linking them to the past, whereas change is a journey into the unknown.
- Tradition is not only about political institutions but about security and belonging eg. red letter boxes for the Royal Mail
