        • involved improving sea promenades, new street lighting and green zones
      • modernisation plan for all tourist accommodation built before 1984
        • Hotels that did not comply with this were forced to close
      • measures out in place to preserve identity of rural towns and villages
      • inland areas were encouraged to engage in small rural tourism projects
    • Local Agenda 21 in Calvia
      • Calvia formulated its own tourism plant
      • one of the first areas to develop mass tourism in Mallorca
      • suffered most from over development
      • project sought to make tourism more sustainable through:
        • reducing the number of tourists
          • but up grading the quality of tourism to attract a higher spending clientele
        • demolition of 5 sea front hotels and converting land into green areas
        • New buildings must adhere to strict planning restrictions and regulations
          • regarding density of occupancy, waste disposal and energy conservation
        • schemes to direct tourism away fro coastal activities into activities such as hill walking, cycling and golf
        • an ambitious scheme to protect fragile landscapes and ecosystems and repair damage.
