  • Tornadoes
    • What are tornadoes?
      • They need an intense storm and the moist and dry air will create unstable air.
      • A violent, dangerous, rotating column of air which is in contact with both the surface of the earth and a cumulonimbus cloud
    • How does the urban area contribute to the tornado hazard?
      • Heat island effect- impermeable surfaces like glass, metal and concrete reflect and store heat differently than tree or grass covered land.
        • Urban environments heat the air and cause moisture to rise quickly- more heat, more energy.
    • What effects have tornadoes had on Atlanta?
      • 1)Damages across a 6 mile swatch of the city. 2)ripped holes in the roof of the Georgia dome. 3)trashing parts of the Olympic park. 4) blowing out office windows.
