  • Network Topologies, Protocols and Layers
    • Topology
      • Ring Network
        • Each device is connected to two other devices.
        • Each packet of data on the network travels in one direction.
        • It can transfer data quickly, even if there is a lot of devices because there is no data collisions
          • if the main cable or any device fails, then the whole network will fail
      • Bus Network
        • All devices are connected are joined to one cable
          • Easy to install and is cheap to
            • Every device on the network sees all of the data on the network, which is a security risk
        • At the end of each cable is a terminator to prevent the signal being reflected
          • All devices are connected are joined to one cable
            • Easy to install and is cheap to
              • Every device on the network sees all of the data on the network, which is a security risk
          • If the main cable fails, the network goes down
            • When more devices are connected it loses performance
      • Star Network
        • Each device has its own cable that connects to a hub
          • It is very reliable and it is high performing as no data collisions can occur
            • It is expensive as it uses lots of cables
              • Extra hardware is required which adds to cost
                • If the Hub fails, the whole network goes down
