  • Tolpuddle Martyrs
    • 1834- Dorset  farmers from Tolpuddle created a trade union.
    • They wanted to stop wages going down.
    • Non-violent but rich farmers thought they might lose control over their workers - government agreed.
    • Government used the law to control them.
    • 1797- Law to stop secret oaths being sworn in the navy was used to arrest the farmers.
      • Because farmers did this about their meetings.
    • They were transported to Australia for 7 years
      • Transportation was an alternative punishment to hanging.
    • Eventually released in 1836.
