- TOF Mass Spectrometry
- 1. Ionisation
- There are two methods, one is Electrospray Ionisation. The sample is dissolved in a solvent and goes through a hole at high pressure. A high voltage is applied so each particle gains H+ ions. The solvent is removed leaving a gas of positive ions.
- 2. Acceleration.
- The positive ions are accelerated by an electric field. This ensures all ions have the same kinetic energy. The lighter ions travel faster.
- 3. Ion drift
- Next, the ions enter a region that has no electric field. Therefore the lighter ions are travelling at higher speeds.
- 4. Detection
- Because the lighter ions travel through the drift region faster they reach the detector first. This records the time taken for them to travel through the spectrometer.
