- Todorov's Equilibrium Structure
- 1. Equilibrium
- the narrative begins in an accepted state of 'normal'
- 2. Disruption
- something occurs in the narrative which disrupts or threatens the established equilibrium
- 3. Recognition
- the disruption to the equilibrium is recognised by the characters in the narrative
- 4. Repair
- an attempt is made to repair the equilibrium by removing the disruption
- 5. New Equilibrium
- a new equilibrium is established within the narrative. This does not have to be the same as the initial equilibrium and it doesn't have to be positive
- Todorov's theory suggests that narratives follow a circular structure
- this theory suggests that the characters' attempts to restore an equilibrium drive the narrative
- Todorov also suggests that a good narrative involves some kind of transformation e.g. characters or surroundings
