  • Time of Flight Mass Spec
    • Ionisation source
      • The sample is ionised (bombarded with a beam of electrons)
        • Positively charged cations are formed
    • Analyser
      • Ions produced are separated according to their mass
    • Detector
      • Ions cause the detector to produce an electric current
        • A computer system converts into a mass spectrum
      • Relative atomic mass of ion can be calculated
    • Vacuum chamber allows ions to accelerate
      • Air particles will slow them down
    • Time measurement measures the ions on the flight path
      • Light ions will reach the ion-detector first
        • Heavy ions will have a longer time of flight and will therefore reach the ion-detector later
