      • 1944- Larkin met Ruth Bonman- first girlfriend- together until 1950, he proposed in 1948
        • Ruth Bonman- very very intelligent girl, 16at the time (Larkin was 22)
      • end of 1950- Larkin had a sexual relationship with Monica Jones- cheated on her with another woman (a friend's wife who had an open marriage)- Jones and Larkin split but still met sexually for years after
        • Monica Jones- going to be the woman who punctuated Larkin's life- ended up together- monogamist at end- she got shingles and it affected her lifestyle, Larkin became her carer
          • Jones found this poem very uncomfortable as she felt it was too similar to them
      • in the 1970s, Larkin had 3 relationships simultaneously
      • had a 28 year affair with his secretary
      • liked long relationships

      • in the 1960s, had an 18 year relationship with a woman who was a devout Catholic- probably not had sex but still had a relationship with Monica Jones at the time
