  • Threats to Henry VI
    • Lovell and Stafford (1485-86)
      • Since Bosworth, Francis, Lord Lovel and Stafford brothers (Thomas, Humphrey) faiithfuls of Richard had been in sanctuary at Colchester
        • Henry had travelled north in April 1486- Lovel headed north planning to ambush king
          • Stafford travelled to Worcester to stir up rebellion in West - Henry sent armed force to offer rebels choice of pardon or if they fought loss- death
            • Rebels dispersed- Lovel flee to Flanders. Staffords sought sanctuary and was granted it by Church
              • Henry felt it was unreasonable for traitors to be allowed sanctuary again- Staffords forcibly removed, arrested and sent to Tower
                • Humphrey executed, Tom pardoned and stayed loyal
    • Edmund De La Pole
      • Causes
        • Death of Warwick - chief Yorkist claimant De La Pole
        • Underlying tension- King hadn't allowed him to inherit father's dukedome
          • Also, DLP (Earl of Suffolk) brother to rebellious Earl of Lincoln who died in Battle of Stoke
        • DLP had a legitimate claim to crown- Son of Richard III's sister and nominated by Richard as heir- increased threat
      • Events
        • July 1499- Suffolk went to Guisnes (near Calais)- H feared backed foreign invasion- persuaded him to return - stayed until 1501
          • DLP fled to brother Richard (in court of Maximilian
            • Yorkist support gathered in Flanders- Henry acted ruthlessly (insecurity)
              • Parliament met in Jan 1504- 51 men connected to Suffolk- attained - largest number condemned by parliament in his reign
                • Key victims: Sir James Tyrell (confessed murdering young prices- preventing future imposters) and Governor of  Guisnes (where DLP sought shelter)
                  • Henry desperate to destroy DLP
                    • Little he could do while DLP was on continent protected by foreign princes
                      • 1506 storm- Philip of Burgundy and wife conveniently forced to take refuge in England
                        • H persuaded him to surrender DLP- agreed on condition that DLP wouldn't be killed
                          • 1513- DLP (Suffolk) executed by Henry VIII
                        • Meanwhile, Richard De La Pole- in Europe trying to get support for his claim to English throne- few Yorkists remained and he was killed in 1525- end of Yorkist threat here?
    • But, it's still a credit to H's clear, decisive judgement and diplomatic skills that he managed to hand the throne to his son- 3 passed kings of England had failed to do so
