    • Alkanes to a high temperature
    • High pressure
    • One electron from the pair of electrons in the bond goes to each carbon atom
      • Two shorter chains are produced
        • Each chain ending in a C with an unpaired e-
          • These free radicals react to form variety of chain. One chain then has a double bond and the other single bond so ones an alkene the other alkane
    • Chain doesn't necessarily break in the middle
    • Doesn't use a catalyst
    • Quick to prevent decomposition
