- Mercedes shows the most truest love in this film by her dedication to Ofelia.
- She plans to take Ofeila with her when she leaves. She looks after her when her mother dies. She never gives up with Ofeila or her baby brother.
- At the end she is the one by Ofeila's side singing a lullaby to her when she is dying.
- When Ofeila dies at the end of the film, the Captain has just been shot and the mother has previously died. She takes the baby, and cares for it like her own.
