    • Bravery
      • Ofeila
        • She is brave by doing all of the tasks for Pan and willing to look after her sick and very ill mother.
          • Example; getting the key from the Toad's belly.
      • Mercedes
        • She is brave by continuously smuggling food for the rebels.
      • Doctor
        • He is brave as he is also working alongside the rebels and he goes against the Captain.
    • Good Vs Evil Vs Innocence
      • Ofeila
        • Ofelia is forced to wrestle with good and evil. She must courageously save her younger brother, first from Pan, and then from the evil Captain Vidal.
        • When Ofeila sacrifices her own life, she is then presented as the innocence.
      • Carmen
        • She has to undergo pain and torture through Pan, resulting in her dying.
        • She tries to be a good mother to Ofeila, even though she has to follow the Captain's commands on how Ofeila should behave.
    • Power and Control
      • Ofeila
        • The power in Ofeila's mind to be able to go to this fantasy world and get away from reality is immense. She believes in everything she does.
      • Captain Vidal
        • Extreme power over anyone else in the film, can control and do whatever he likes to anyone.
          • Example; the rebel he brings back, he beats because he can't say something.
        • He tries re enforce power on anyone and if someone betters him he does them wrong. Example; kills them.
        • His ultimate power is over Carmen, getting her to believe what he says is right and doesn't allow her to have a say in how Ofeila is brought up.
          • Control and dominance over his family, even though he isn't Ofeila's real father.
            • His dominance is also represented in the Fantasy world by the Toad.
              • His power is represented through the character of the Pale Man, as he is very powerful over Ofelia
    • Death
      • Many people die within this film, all of them would be relevance to Ofeila in some way, they would all of been willing to protect her.
        • Example; her mother dying in childbirth was significant as it was her mother and we know that the Captain would of rather keep the son instead of her.
      • Ofeila was in fact shot by her step father.
    • Love
      • Mercedes shows the most truest love in this film by her dedication to Ofelia.
        • She plans to take Ofeila with her when she leaves. She looks after her when her mother dies. She never gives up with Ofeila or her baby brother.
          • At the end she is the one by Ofeila's side singing a lullaby to her when she is dying.
          • When Ofeila dies at the end of the film, the Captain has just been shot and the mother has previously died. She takes the baby, and cares for it like her own.
      • Captain clearly doesn't love Carmen and is purely with her for the son, who can take his power.
        • It could also be suggested that Carmen doesn't love him either. She gets treated badly by him.
      • The Doctor is a huge lover, he is not only a lover for his occupancy, helping people, he loves the country for how they are fighting to free people.
