      • The poem is made up of a series of couplets. This creates a sense of fragmentation,which reflects the feelings of the solders wife as she seeks to understand the man her husband has become.

        • The poem often repeats 'only then.' This suggests that the wife is patient, and is willing to wait in order to find the man she married.
        • 'Manhunt' suggests the idea of men literally being hunted like pray at war. It also suggests that the wife is searching for her lost husband, as in order to hunt something you must find it first.

      • 'Blown hinge' suggests that he can't open up to his wife, perhaps because he can't speak.
      • 'Handle and hold' and 'mind and attend' imply than the wife (Laura) is helping her husband recover while searching for his old-self.
