  • The Heart
    • Is a double pump, divided in two. On both sides the heart squeezes the blood putting it under pressure forcing the blood along the arteries
      • Right side pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to oxygenated.
      • Left side pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body
    • Atria - receive blood from the major veins
    • Ventricles  -  pump blood out
    • Blood Pressure - contraction increases blood pressure. The higher the pressure in the heart, the further it will push the blood
      • Atria  -  muscle is thin because these chambers do not need to create much pressure, their function is to push the blood into the ventricles
      • Right Ventricle - thicker than the walls of the atria thinner than the left ventricle though as only need to pump to the lungs.
      • Left Ventricle - two or three times thicker than those of the right ventricle as has to produce enough pressure to overcome the resistance of the systemic circulation
