- The Group 1 Elements
- Group 1 elements react vigorously with water, give off hydrogen gas and the metal reacts with water to form an alkali-the hydroxide of the metal
- The group 1 elements have similar properties, because they have one electron on the outer shell
- When they have reacted, they lose one electron, meaning the have a full outer shell and therefore a stable electronic structure
- If electrons are lost, the process is called oxidation
- K - e- ---> K+
- Flame test method- wire is cleaned in hydrochloric acid, dipped into the chemical, put in a Bunsen burner and the colours are recorded
- Lithium burns red, sodium burns orange/yellow and potassium burns lilac
