  • The Great Powers in Europe - 1900
    • Britain
      • Ruled an empire containing over 1/4 of the worlds population. Had a strong navy to protect itself and its colonies. During the 19th century they followed a policy of 'Splendid Isolation', meaning they wouldn't get involved with European policies.
    • Germany
      • Had a smaller empire rules by Kaiser Wilhelm II. Jealous of Britains empire and sea power. He wanted to increase German influence to the world. Germany was described as there 'Place in the sun/
    • France
      • Had an overseas empire. They were bitter about losing Alsace Lorraine in the Franco-Prussian War (1871)
    • Austria-Hungary
      • Centeral European empire, rules by Franz Joseph I. Made up of 10 different nationalities, many of which wanted independence
    • Russia
      • Poor, however the biggest country in Europe. Ruled by Tsar Nicholas II. No land overseas, wanted land in Europe and Asia with access to the sea.
