  • New weapons
    • Machine guns
      • Effective and very damaging. Could fire 400-600 bullets per minute.
    • Gas
      • Chlorine and phosgene gas caused suffocation. Mustard gas ate away at the lung and cause a slow agonising death.
    • Artillery shells
      • Fired shells into enemy trenches up to 13km away. Difficult to work.
    • Tanks
      • Tanks were used for the first time by the British in the Battle of the Somme.  It could break through an enemy line and allow soldiers to follow. The tanks had devastating impacts on the German losses.
        • The tanks could only move at a walking pace and were very unreliable because most of the machines broke down in the mud.
