- The continuing significance of prophetic experience
- Disagree
- For literalist's the bible is true...must believe in the importance of prophets as they are mentioned so much
- For religious believers, Old Testament prophetic experience provides inspiration and guidance
- eg.Elijah shows courage, Samuel shows wiseness
- Old Testament prophetic experience, particularly, as exemplified by Elijah, 'reflected' in modern prophetic figures/moments.
- Figures eg. Martin Luther King Jr, Desman Tutu, Oscar Romero
- Movements eg. Protest against world poverty and exploitation of workers, campaigns against corruption in multinationals and governments
- Oscar Romero- Bishop of the catholic church. He was made a saint by Pope Francis on February 3rd 2015. He spoke out against poverty, social injustice, assassinations and torture.
- Elijah spoke out about all the injustices of his time
- Agree
- Prophecy as seen in the Old Testament was a cultural phenomenon of the ancient world
- The activities and oracles of Old Testament prophets were meaningful only to be Israelites of their day
- People invented / developed ideas that present us with answers now rather than looking too far ahead
- Science and technology today can explain and lead to answers for the future
- Less of a guessing game
- Disagree
- Some features in particular of Old Testament prophecy are alien to the 21st century
- eg. Visions, prophetic ecstasy, prophetic symbolism
