  • THE COGNITIVE APPROACH TO ABNORMALITY
    • Abnormality results from faulty cognition
      • Kendall (1993)-problems are caused by distortions and deficiencies
        • Cognitive distortions: information is not accurately processed. Cognitive deficiencies:  lack of planning and thinking
    • Beck (1967) - Cognitive triad : Self, World & Future. Depression is caused by cognitive error
    • COGNITIVE THERAPIES: COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY(CBT)
      • STEP 1) UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM
      • STEP 2) WORK OUT HOW TO CHANGE THE FEELINGS AND BEHAVIOURS .  Replace them with positiive feelings
    • Does CBT work?
      • It aims to get rid of the problem and not just the symptoms
      • Keller  (2001) - combination of CBT and drug therapy is more effective than either therapy alon
      • Evans (1992) -  it's as good as drug therapy in preventing relapse
      • Butler (2006) - effectiveness depends on the severity of the disorder
