The Carbon Cycle

  • Carbon Cycle
    • Co2 is absorbed by plants in photosynthasis
    • Co2 becomes carbon compounds in plant tissue
    • carbon is passed on to consumers down the food chain
    • dead organic matter is digested by microorganisms - decomposeres (saprobiontic nutrition)
    • carbon returns to air via respiration
    • if there's no decomposeres (e.g. in ocean) organic matter is turned into fossil fuels over millions of years
    • carbon from fossil fuels is released when they are burnt (combustion)
    • photosynthesis removes carbon from the atmosphere
