  • The Breathing System
    • Lungs in thorax
    • Lungs protected by ribcage
    • Air breathe in and goes in through the trachea
      • Splits into two tubes - bronchi (bronchus if one) going into each lung
        • Bronchi split into smaller tubes - bronchioles
          • At end of bronchioles - alveoli where gas exchange takes place
    • Adaptations for exchanging materials
      • Have large SA
      • Thin
    • Alveoli - large SA, rich blood supply, maintains concentration gradient in both directions
    • Breathing in
      • Intercostal muscles and diaphragm contract
      • Thorax volume increases
      • Decreases the pressure, drawing air in
    • Breathing out
      • Intercostal muscles and diaphragm relax
      • Thorax volume decreases
      • Increases pressure, air is forced out
  • Breathing in
    • Intercostal muscles and diaphragm contract
    • Thorax volume increases
    • Decreases the pressure, drawing air in
