- The brain
- cerebral cortex: outer layer - sets us apart from lower animals; more corticalized (increase in size/wrinkling of brain), more intelligent a person is; responsible for: ability to use language and acquire complex skills - has 2 sides connected by a thick band of fibers called corpus callosum
- Left side : responsible for right side of the body - used for language, math, coordination of complex movements; processes info sequentially
- Right side: responsible for left side of the body; used for simple language and numbers but good at perceptual skills (recognising patterns, faces, emotions felt by others)- basically helps see overall context on which something is said
- damage to one hemisphere: spatial neglect - pay no attention to the affected side of the space
