- The Blood System
- Heart
- It is an organ that pumps blood around the body.
- Much of the wall of the heart is made from muscle tissue
- It has 4 main chambers.
- Left & Right atria and ventricles.
- The process
- Blood enters ATRIA of heart
- Atria CONTRACTS and forces blood into VENTRICLES
- Ventricles CONTRACT and force blood put of heart
- [VALVES in heart ensure that blood flows in correct direction]
- Blood flows from heart to organs through ARTERIES and returns through VEINS
- Ventricles CONTRACT and force blood put of heart
- Atria CONTRACTS and forces blood into VENTRICLES
- Blood enters ATRIA of heart
- Arteries
- Take blood AWAY
- Have thick walls containing muscle and elastic fibres
- If they become too narrow, and restrict blood flow
- STENTS used to keep them open
- Veins
- Take blood TO the heart
- Have thinner walls and often have valves to prevent back-flow of muscles
- Heart
- Circulatory system transports substances around the body

- Heart
- There are 2 seperate circulation systems.
- One for lungs
- One for other organs of the body
- The Blood System
- Aorta
- Artery. Carries blood out of left ventricle of heart, to other arteries of the body.
- Pulmonary Artery
- Takes blood from the heart to the lungs
- Vena Cava
- Brings deoxygenated blood from the body back to the heart
- Pulmonary Vein
- Caries oxygenated blood from lungs to heart
