  • The transition elements
    • Physical properties:  good conductors of electricity and thermal energy, hard, strong, high densities, high melting points (except mercury)
    • Chemical properties: less reactive than alkali metals, corrode slowly, react slowly, useful as structural materials
  • Compounds of the transition elements:
    • Copper (II)sulfate is blue due to it's Cu 2+ ions
    • Nickel (II) carbonate is pale green due to it's Ni 2+ ions
    • Chromium (II) oxide is dark green due to it's Cr 3+ ions
    • Manganese (II) chloride is a pale pink  due to it's Mn 2+ ions
    • The transition elements

  • They usually contain a roman number- this is because they can form more than one ion
