      • yeomen were the successful farmers.
      • 60,000 by 1600.
      • financially secure and well educated.
      • Artisans were skilled craftsmen.
      • more involved in local government in later years.
    • 6.Peasants
      • worked on the land for wages
      • relied on the production of food for survival.
      • most vulnerable to changes and illness etc.
      • made up a majority of the popuilation.
      • 2/5 of the population were living on margins.
    • 7.Vagrants and Beggars.
      • without masters and roamed.
      • feared - they were under no command.
      • could spread rumours and news.
      • threat to social order.
      • harshly treated in government.
