- was possible to rise and fall through the ranks.

- held the highest titles below the king.

- natural friends, advisers and military leaders to the monarch.
- relied on the monarch, and the monarch relied on them.

- The monarch was believed to be chosen by god, and is therefor below him.
- need the noble and gentry support to rule England.
- nobiolity should be controlled AND listened to.
- 5. Yeomen
- yeomen were the successful farmers.
- 60,000 by 1600.
- financially secure and well educated.
- Artisans were skilled craftsmen.
- more involved in local government in later years.
- 6.Peasants
- worked on the land for wages
- relied on the production of food for survival.
- most vulnerable to changes and illness etc.
- made up a majority of the popuilation.
- 2/5 of the population were living on margins.
- 7.Vagrants and Beggars.
- without masters and roamed.
- feared - they were under no command.
- could spread rumours and news.
- threat to social order.
- harshly treated in government.
