- The Lungs
- This is where blood gets oxygen and removes carbon dioxide
- Air goes through the trachea
- Splits into two tubes called bronci
- They then progressively split into smaller tubes called bronchioles
- They end at alveoli where gas exchange takes place
- They then progressively split into smaller tubes called bronchioles
- Splits into two tubes called bronci
- Gas Exchange
- Happens in the alveoli
- Blood passing next to the alveoli has been around the body so contain lots of carbon dioxide but little oxygen
- Oxygen diffuses out of the alveoli and into the blood
- Carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood and into the alveoli.
- When blood reaches a body cell the oxygen diffuses into the cell and carbon dioxide diffuses from the cell into the blood.
- Adaptations for gaseous exchange
- Millions of alveoli
- The alveoli have:
- A large surface area
- Moist lining for dissolving gases
- Very thin walls
- A good blood supply.
- They are surrounded by pleural membranes
- The diaphragm is below the lungs
- When you breathe in it pulls down
- Increasing lung volume and decreasing air pressure
- Pushing air into the lungs
- Increasing lung volume and decreasing air pressure
- When you breathe out it goes back up.
- Decreasing lung volume and increasing air pressure
- Forcing air out of the lungs
- Decreasing lung volume and increasing air pressure
- When you breathe in it pulls down
