- "When": Volta introduces a complete change in tone.
- 3 main sections: 1=Tone is fairly light. 2=Disticnt change when the mountain appears. Tone is darker. 3=Narrator reflects on how the experience has changed him.

- Confdence: The narrator feels comfortable and in control to start with, but his confidence in himself and the world around him is shaken by one event.
- Fear: Nature is shown to be more powerful than a human. The narrator is left with a feeling of respect for nature but he's also scared by it.

- Language
- Beautiful
- The succession of "I" sounds helps the poem flow like the boat moving across the lake
- "Fairy boat": The metaphor makes the scene seem magical and not threatening.
- Confident
- "Like a swan": The simile shows that he's confident and in control.
- "Proud of his skill": Narrator seems confident.
- Dramatic language
- "The horizon's bound a huge peak, black and huge": Different language used comapred to the start (Darker and threatening)
