- Atom are represented by symbols
- For example: carbon is 'C' and oxygen is 'O'
- The periodic table puts elements with similar properties together
- All elements in a group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell
- For example, group 1 elements are Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr. They are all metals and they all react the same way

- The top number of the element in the tabe is the mass number. This is the total number of protons and neutrons
- The bottom number is the atomic number. This is the number of protons and the number of electrons
- All of group 7 are non-metals
- Group 1 and 2 are both reactive metals
