  • The Paschal Mystery

      • Luke's Gospel chapter 22 says that at the Last Supper, Jesus said that the bread was his body and the wine was his blood.
      • Luke's Gospel chapter 23 says that when he was on the cross Jesus asked God to forgive those crucifying him.
      • The Catechism teaches that the resurrection gives definitive proof of Jesus' divine authority.
      • The Catechism teaches that the Paschal mystery is that by his death Christ liberates us from sin; by his Resurrection he opens the way to a new life.
    • Importance of the Paschal Mystery
      • The last supper is the basis of the Mass, the most important form of Christian worship.
      • Christians believe the crucifixion brought forgiveness from sin.
      • The resurrection of Jesus shows that we too will be resurrected.
      • The ascension shows that there is life after death.
      • It shows Cathlics the events of the Passion and Resurrection were the work of God. Through his death and resurrection Christ has opened opened the way to heaven for humans and saved us.
    • How does it save us?
      • The life of Jesus
        • The reason God became incarnate was to save us. It was Jesus' purpose.
        • Jesus shows us how to behave in order to be saved.
        • Through Jesus' teachings he taught us how to be Holy.
      • The Death of Jesus
        • Jesus sacrificed himself so our sins could be forgiven.
        • Through the death of Jesus, the punishment was cancelled as Jesus paid the price for all sins.
      • The Resurrection
        • It proves Jesus is God as no one other than God can conquer death.
        • It is not a past event but a present one as Jesus said 'I am with you always'.(Matthew 28:20)
        • Christ had a transformed risen body and so humans will as well after death.
      • The Ascension
        • When he ascends he prepares the ways the way for humans to follow.
        • It proves Jesus conquered death completely.
        • It was the 'letting go' of Jesus so the Holy Spirit could come at Pentecost and continue Jesus' work in the church.
    • How does it guarantee redemption?
      • Jesus offered himself for the salvation of humans and paid the price for our sins. He made real the offering During the Last Supper. "This is my body given for you", (Luke 22:19)
      • Christs resurrection promises resurrection for all people.
      • The ascension gives hope that one day we will be reunited with Jesus in heaven.
    • Why doesn't the Paschal Mystery save us?
      • Some would deny that Jesus was God (Such as Jewish People)
      • Some say it makes no sense how an innocent man could pay the price of all guilty people, 2000 years after he died.
    • Events
      • 1.THE LAST SUPPER. Jesus enjoyed a meal with his disciples.
      • 2.GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE. Judas arrived with chief priests to arrest Jesus.
      • 3.THE TRIALS. Jesus was guilty of blasphemy. Peter denied he knew  Jesus
      • 4.THE CRUCIFIXION. Jesus was crucified on a Friday.
      • 5.THE RESURRECTION AND ASCENSION. Jesus appeared in Jerusalem for 40 days and was then taken up into a cloud.
