  • The Pali Cannon
    • A. The Pali Cannon is made up of the Tripitaka (the three baskets) These are The Vinaya pitaka, Sutta pitaka and the abhidhamma pitaka
      • The Vinaya pitaka means discipline and contains rules for monks and nuns to follow
        • The Patimokkha is within the vinaya pitaka
          • B. One very important section of the Pali Cannon is the Patimokkha which contains 227 rules for Bhikkus (monks) and 311 for Bhikkunis (nuns) to follow
            • The rules within the Patimokkha are catagorised into seven levels:
              • 1. The parajikas (entailing expulsion)
                • C. The Parajikas are four very important rules within the Patimokkha as if a Buddhist/ Bhikku/ Bhikkuni does not follow them they could be expelled from the Sangha
                  • 1. SEX: Monks and Nuns cannot have sexual intercourse with anyone including members in and outside of the Sangha
                  • 2. THEFT: Monks and Nuns cannot steal and there are no exceptions
                  • 3. MURDER: This does not just mean the killing of another person but also encouraging someone else to kill themselves or someone else- including abortion.
                  • 4.SPIRITUAL FRAUD: Claiming to be further along your journey to enlightenment than you actually are e.g. claiming to be an arhat when you aren't
              • 2. Involving a meeting of the Sangha and includes rules on sensual manners
              • 3. Rules regarding being alone with a woman
              • 4. Entailing Confessions
              • 5. entailing acknowledgements
              • 6. Rules on training
              • 7. Rules on settling disputes
            • The patimokkha is chanted by the Sangha every two weeks- some memorise all the rules
            • The Patimokkha are positive as they seek to guide Buddhists on the right path
            • Each rule within the Patimokkha has a story behind it as to why it was passed down
      • The Sutta Pitaka contains most of the teachings of the Buddha
      • The abhidhamma pitaka means higher teachings and explains the teachings of the Buddha

      • The Biography of The Buddha is very important to Buddhists today as it forms the best example of how to reach enlightenment
      • The Budda's story is the start of all Buddhist teachings
      • There are many different forms of Buddhism that interpret the biography and teachings differently e.g. Japanese shin Buddhist monks often marry nuns, rejecting the strict Vinaya whereas Theravada Buddhists adhere to all rules
      • Some elements to the Buddha's life such as the four sights can be seen as part of a Hagiographical story which means that whilst some elements may be true, others can be glorified to show the importance of the Buddha-
