- It controls the system hardware including memory, processor time and storage.
- Here are some of it's main functions
- Managing memory when the computer is carrying out more than 1 task
- Allocating processor time between the various processes being carried out.
- Controlling where data is stored on disk.
- Communicating with input and output devices.
- Handling errors and displaying error messages
- System Security, user and filke permissions
- The operating system is also responsible for providing the end user interface
