- In September 1923, the Nazi party joined the Kampfbund to plan their tactics against the Republic. The SA became part of the military wing and Hitler was given the political leadership
- Hitler was expected to win over the public so they would support a Putsch in Munich, then a dictatorship in Berlin that would be headed by Ludendorff
- The Putsch needed to win the backing of Von Kahr, Von Seisser and Von Lossow
- Von Kahr was the Bavarian State Commission-er
- Von Seisser was the head of Bavarian police
- General Von Lossow was the commander of the Bavarian army
- On the 3rd November Seisser was told by the head of the German Army not to oppose the government in Berline
- Hitler seized Von Kahr and his colleagues at a meeting on the 8th November in a beer hall
- They initially agreed but then Hitler was called away and Ludendorff was left in charge
- He let the go once they agreed to support Hitler
- They then ordered the police to break up the march

- Hitler was arrested a few days later and sentenced 5 years imprisonment in Feb 1924
- He would be released early on probation and was eventually released in December 1924
- The Putsch and trial gave Hitler nationwide publicity
- Whilst Hitler was in prison he dictated Mein Kampf to his secretary Rudolf Hess

- At the time, Hitler wasn't seen as a big threat to the Republic
- Hitler changed his tactics and realised he would have to win seats in the Reichstag to take over
