- The Models of Memory
- The Multi Store Model
- This model was created by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
- They believed that memory consisted of three stores
- Sensory Register
- Duration-milliseconds Capacity- very large
- Short Term Memory (STM)
- Duration- 18 seconds Capacity- very limited 7+/-2
- Long Term Memory (LTM)
- Duration-unlimited Capacity-unlimited
- Sensory Register
- Coding of information is different for each store
- Sensory Register
- Can be any it depends on the sense
- STM
- Acoustically
- LTM
- Semantically
- Sensory Register
- The Working Memory Model
- This model was created by Baddeley and Hitch (1974)
- They believed that memory is not just one store but a number of different stores.
- The store focused on STM only and believed it was not a unitary store.
- There are four main parts of the model.
- Central executive
- It is a key component as it directs attention to tasks
- It has a limited capacity
- Visuospatial sketchpad
- It has limited capacity
- Visual = what something looks like
- Spatial = relationship between things
- Visuo cache (store) Inner scribe-spatial relationships
- Episodic buffer
- It is general storage
- It has limited capacity
- Phonological loop
- It has limited capacity
- Phonological store - holds words you hear
- Articulatory process - holds words you see/hear and silently repeats
- Central executive
- The Multi Store Model
