      • PONTIFICAL MAGISTERIUM: The Pope uses papal infallibility to decide a doctrine.
      • CONCILLIAR MAGISTERIUM:The Pope calls a general council to decide teachings (eg Vatican II).
      • ORDINARY MAGISTERIUM: When the Bishops teach what has always been taught.
    • SOWA
      • "The task of interpreting the words of God authentically has been entrusted solely to the magisterium, that is to the Pope and Bishops in Communion with him." -CCC
      • It is the magisteriums  task to preserve Gods people from error and so has been given the gift of infallibility in matters of faith and morals.
    • What is the Magisterium
      • Pope and Cardinals form the magisterium.
      • Official decision making body of the Church.
      • Interpreting the teachings of the Church for the lives of Christians today.
      • Deals with issues not in the Bible.
      • Reflects on the teachings of Jesus, the Apostles and their successors. It provides the official teachings of the Church in the Catechism.
    • Importance
      • There is no higher authority for Catholics.
      • It is guided by the Holy Spirit.
      • It provdes clear guidelines for Chritians on modern issues.
      • The authority comes from the Apostles through Apostolic tradition.
    • Why would we not need the magisterium?
      • Protestant Chritians
        • The Bible is God's word and our guide for life, we can work out what he wants us to do without guidance.
        • They may argue the magisterium is made up of only men and so cant be relevant in the modern world where women must also have a role in leadership.
