- The League of Nations.
- When the League was formed it had 42 members but this rose to 58. Britain, France, Italy and Japan were the main countries.
- Britain and France didn't trust the USSR so they couldn't join. The American senate didn't want to join and Italy and Japan eventually left.
- Aims.
- It was thought the League would encourage collective security.
- People wanted an organisation to encourage countries to work together to resolve problems.
- Encourage disarnment.
- Improve working conditions.
- Tackle diseases.
- Why it failed.
- It only met once a year.
- Decisions had to be unanimous but there were too many people.
- It had no army.
- It was slow to act.
- Trade sanctions didn't work because the USA and USSR were not involved.
- The Great Depression meant countries were more worried about themselves.
- They failed to stop Mussolini and Hitler which showed they were weak.
- Italy and Japan left.
