- Thailand: 1700 tourists from 36 countries killed.
- Maldives: 20 out of 199 inhabited islands destroyed. 81 deaths.
- Responses
- over 160 aid organisations provided relief.
- Tsunami warning system set up by UN group for Indian ocean
- Sirens for tourist beaches in Thailand, but warning received by radio for poor rural areas.
