        • Densely populated- 135 people per km2.
      • Sri Lanka: 28,000 killed, 1 million homeless
      • Thailand: 1700 tourists from 36 countries killed.
      • Maldives: 20 out of 199 inhabited islands destroyed. 81 deaths.
    • Responses
      • over 160 aid organisations provided relief.
      • Tsunami warning system set up by UN group for Indian ocean
        • Sirens for tourist beaches in Thailand, but warning received by radio for poor rural areas.
      • Large scale reconstruction
        • Thousands still in tents one year on.
