  • The Human Nervous System
    • The Central Nervous System (CNS)
      • The Brain
        • Frontal Lobe
          • thought and speech production
        • Occipital Lobe
          • processing of visual images
        • Temporal Lobe
          • hearing
        • Parietal Lobe
          • Processing Sensory Information
        • The Diencephalon
          • Thalamus
            • Relay station for nerve impulses coming from the senses, and directing them towards the appropriate parts of the brain to be processed
          • Hypothalamus
            • Regulates body temperature, hunger and thirst. Also acts as a link between the endocrine system and the nervous system as it controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland
        • Cerebellum
          • Controls motor skills and balance
        • Brain Stem
          • Regulates the automatic functions essential for life eg. breathing, heartbeat, swallowing
        • Cerebrum
          • Split into 2 hemispheres that communicate through the corpus callosum
      • The Spinal Cord
        • Relays information between the brain and the rest of the body
        • Contains circuits of nerve cells that enable us to perform some simple reflexes without direct involvement of the brain
      • The control of behaviour and regulation of the body's physiological processes
    • The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
      • The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
        • Sympathetic Nervous System
          • Responds to fight or flight eg. increases heart rate, increases blood pressure, dilates blood vessels
        • Parasympathetic Nervous System
          • regulate the same organs but have opposite effects
            • Sympathetic Nervous System
              • Responds to fight or flight eg. increases heart rate, increases blood pressure, dilates blood vessels
          • Relaxes you after fight or flight eg. decreases heart rate, decreases blood pressure, constricts blood vessels
        • Involves actions without your conscious awareness
      • The Somatic Nervous System (SNS)
        • made up of cranial and spinal nerves that have both sensory and motor neurons
        • Involved in reflex actions without the involvement of the CNS, which allows the reflex to happen very quickly
      • relays nerve impulses from the CNS  to the rest of the body and from the body back to the CNS.
