- Efforts to improve relations during the Détente period.
- 33 countries signed it including the USA and USSR.
- Security
- All country boundaries were accepted. East and West Germany accepted the other's existence for the first time.
- All disputes to be settled peacefully without force or threats . (Through the UN if necessary)
- No country to interfere in the internals affairs of another
- Countries to inform each other of any big military movement and would accept representatives from other countries to observe them.
- Co-operation
- Economic, through trade. (USA buy oil from the USSR, the USSR buy wheat from the USA)
- Industrial, through setting the same standard and running joint projects.
- Scientific, sharing information and research - e.g. medicine or space research
- Educational, e.g. learning languages, exchange students
- Human rights
- To respect human rights and basic freedoms such as though, speech religion and freedom from unfair arrest.
- Stabilized the situation in Europe by agreeing greater co-operation between the super powers and their European allies
- Limited possibility of superpower conflict by creating a stable relationship between the USSR and American in Europe.
- Efforts to improve relations during the Détente period.
