View mindmap
  • The greatest problem which faced homesteaders was the climate.’
    • Climate:  There was extremes of weather. Scorching hot summers & Freezing cold winters. It was hard for homesteaders to live in these conditions
      • Dry farming - this was a method used by which they conserved the water in the soil through ploughing soon after heavy rain.
    • There was a lack of water and very hard earth
      • Windpumps - these provided water to the land and homesteaders
    • Shortage of building materials, so there houses couldn't be as nice as they wanted them to be. usually made of sod.
      • Better machinery - stronger ploughs were built that would churn earth
    • Prairie fires and plagues - these could destroy crops in no time at all.
      • New crops - they grew harder types of crops such as turkey red wheat which could survive the conditions better
    • Protecting the crops - especially against cattle trails.
      • Fencing the land
    • Arguably the most important factor was the climate as it applied to everyone as there was nothing that the could do to stop it.
