    • ENVIRONMENT AND POLLUTION
      • polluted area (big city, major road), more likely to suffer from poor health
      • London- high mortality rate, respiratory diseases. poor air quality
      • Devon and Cornwall in SW England are countryside areas, much less pollution, better health there
    • EDUCATION
      • better educated, more likely to choose healthy lifestyle
        • not smoking, exercise, healthy foods
      • poor education = poor knowledge of how to stay healthy
      • (2003) nearly 20% working population in NE England had no educational qualifications
      • 10.7% working age population in SW England had no educational qualifications
        • more likely to do manual job
    • OCCUPATION TYPE
      • manual job, 3 x more likely to suffer from poor health than a non-manual job
        • higher exposure to hazardous substances and risk of accidents
        • manual= labourer, cleaner
      • more manual jobs in North
      • people doing non-manual jobs are more likely to suffer from stress and mental health problems
        • London has the highest proportion of non-manual jobs and the highest level of self-reported stress cases
    • SEX
      • women tend to live longer than men
        • BUT are twice as likely to have higher morbidity from chronic illnesses
          • IE arthritis
      • women are less likely to take part in sports than men
        • 18.5% compared to 23.7%
        • some leisure facilities have introduced 'ladies only' sessions to encourage participation
