  • What is functionalism?
    • Functionalism is based on the view that society is a system of interdependent parts held together by shared culture or value consensus
      • What is value consensus?
        • Family + Religion + Education + Media= Value Consensus
        • A shared belief which is agreed by all members of society
    • Functionalism: Education
      • Durkheim
        • Durkheiim thought of 2 functions of education- 1) The function of education is to maintain social solidarity 2) To develop the skills young people need for the future specialist skills
        • If everyone has the skills to play their role in society then it'll  run smoothly and play their part in the "division of labour"
      • Parsons
        • Parsons believed that schools are important places of secondary socialization, taking over from family as children grow older
        • Believes that school provides a bridge the particularistic views, values and ascribed status of the family and the universalistic values and achieved status of contemporary societies which are based on the values of meritocracy
      • Schultz
        • Developed the theory of human capital
          • This suggests that high levels of spending on education etc is necessary as it develops peoples knowledge and skills which is important in a successful economy
      • Davis and Moore
        • The education system is a means of selecting and sifting people for different levels of the job market and ensuring the most qualified and talented individuals are in the most important jobs
        • In a meritocratic society there is  equality of educational opportunity and everyone who has the ability and talent and puts in the effort has an equal chance of coming out ahead
