    • The Four Noble Truths are the Buddha's main teachings
      • The Doctor Analogy is used to describe the Four Noble Truths
        • 1st Noble Truth = The illness
        • 2nd Noble Truth = The cause of the illness

        • 4th Noble Truth = The cure

      • The origin of suffering
        • SAMUDAYA
      • The Buddha claimed to have found the cause of all suffering
      • He taught that the root of all suffering is desire (Tanha)
        • This comes in 3 forms - THE THREE POISONS
          • The 3 roots of evil are the 3 ultimate causes of suffering
      • FIRE SERMON: where the Buddha taught more about suffering
    • The Third Noble Truth
      • End of suffering
        • NIRODHA
      • The way to extinguish desire is to liberate oneself from attachment
        • The Buddha was a living example that this is possible
      • Nirvana: extinguishing. Reaching enlightenment means extinguishing the 3 fires
      • FIRE SERMON: "When I liberated, there is knowledge that he is liberated."
        • After death an enlightened person is liberated from the cycle of rebirth
          • No definite answers as to what happens next
    • The Fourth Noble Truth
      • The Eightfold Path/ Middle is the cure to ending suffering
        • WISDOM: right understanding + right intention
        • ETHICAL CONDUCT: right speech, right action + right livelihood
        • MEDITATION: right effort, right mindfulness + right concentration
      • The cure
        • MAGGA
      • The Buddha described the Eightfold Path as a means to enlightenment
