  • The Cliche kid
    • structure
      • Dramatic monologue
      • Narrative, with a rigid structure of 3 lines per stanza.
      • Structure juxtaposes the content of the poem, being confused, could mimic the speakers desire for normality in his life, wants to be a cliche.
      • At the end of every stanza an ellipsis is used, which creates the sense of a child trailing off, suggesting their is more to tell but keeps being distracted. Ellipses often used in conversation/ spoken mode indicates speakers is talking to someone e.g doctor.
    • Mental illness
      • "the fresh baked grass, dammit, the new-mown bread" two cliche phrases mixed together to create a deviant collocation, showing deep confusion in their mind, suggests mental illness.
        • "The kid so unpopular even my imaginary friend left me" Punch-line exhibits loneliness, uses humour to mask mental illness. Changes from their person to first person shows confusion. Also lack of correct grammar shoes child nature.
      • Frequent use of imperatives "Give me a break" is irony as normally doctor giving orders, suggesting voice of the poem is juvenile. Talking to himself, sign of mental illness.
      • "seeing childhood memories through my tears" metaphor, suggests cant cope any longer in despair indicated by noun "tears", confused and feels helpless as cant escape. wants "childhood" back, adjective suggests  no longer living happy childhood. Reveals true pain of mental illness.
      • The poem deals with the topic of mental illness in children. It presents time as somewhat against the character in the poem,as he is sick of being a kid due to how powerless they feel. Wants time to move faster.
    • Childhood
      • Short simple sentences at the start of the stanza for impact, could demonstrate the speakers bitter frustration at their unconventional childhood, confused and cant make sense of /or lost for words.
      • "the smell, the smell, the smell of a baby's head" repetition of olfactory sense/verb "smell" sounds wistful, nostalgic and reminiscent. As if missing being a small child with no worries, everything was simple. Another cliche could be intended to juxtapose the dark content of the poem.
      • The verb "boozing" and common noun "Doc" colloquialism, unusual for a child to use an example of them being different from other children. Also "Doc" relates to mental illness as if speaker is talking to a doctor.
